The Frankenstein Theory (2013)

Kris Lemche of Ginger Snaps fame stars as a descendant of Victor Von Frankenstein in this found footage movie where Mary Shelley's novel was based on real events.

Kris plays Jonathan Venkenheim, great, great, great grandson of Johann Venkenheim. The illuminati in this reality were chasing the secrets of immortality and after much trial and error they finally created the monster but were so horrified by what they made they destroyed all the research leaving Jonathan with no proof it even happened so he wants to to find proof in the form of the monster itself.

What could possibly go wrong?

His friend from college and the head of the documentary team is Vicky, she believes him but the other members of the crew think he's mad as a hatter, as does his own wife.

They head out into Canada with intent of going into the arctic as Jonathan believes he has tracked the monster down to based on the movement of caribou herds as well as random unexplained deaths near where the caribou had moved.

He'll believe that Johan created a man from bits of re-animated bodies but not in serial killer caribous?

They make a stop to chat to someone Jonathan spoke to online that claims to have had an encounter with the monster and is played by Joe Egender who I LOVE in everything he does, he's an amazing actor.

Joe is playing a cranky little meth head but he has however seen the monster, this fuels Jonathan further but does nothing to convince Vicky's crew. When they tell Joe that the thing that chased him was the fabled monster he thinks they're mocking him and pulls a gun.

They quickly leave and Jonathan is convinced that Joe's story means the monster is out there but Vicky's crew see only the ramblings of a meth head. Later they hook up with a guide in the inhospitable northernmost Canada. He is slightly bemused about their reasons but takes them anyway coz why would he believe that Frankenstein's monster is real? Later on while drunk he confesses that he thinks the murders may well have been a polar bear and tells a story reminiscent of The Revenant but with a white bear and a missing leg instead of a brown bear who may or may not be a rapist.

This got written off as bad and boring found footage which it is not.

There are allusions to things and everything, like, the guide thinking it's a bear and not a monster is akin to people maintaining Bigfoot is a bear on it's hindlegs. I've seen a lot and I mean A LOT of bad found footage and they don't have allusions like this.

This film also doesn't waste too much time with random walking and running from things. Only two short instances of things knocking about outside the yurt too. Very good acting as well, like far, far above average for this kind of piece and while the presence of someone as well known in horror circles at Kris Lemche dilutes what has a fairly genuine feel to it, you still get the Blair Witch (1999 not the godawful remakes) sense of reality.

The hints throughout that maybe it's not really a Frankenstein's monster are ruined by the box art so it's no spoiler for me to tell you that Jonathan is right and the big undead lump with it's big ugly face is indeed knocking around the wilds of Alaska but will it respond to Jonathan as favourably as he hopes? does it have any human intelligence?

A very above average found footage

Interesting Stuff:

The monster is played by Roger Morrissey who was the Gingerbread demon in a Buffy episode

There is a scene that seemingly makes no sense where Vicky and her friend rear end another driver and he wants to pull them out of the car...is this some commentary on the inherently aggressive nature of man or is the actor a friend of someone?
